Asteroid has launched its first Internet Exchange Point (IXP) offering customers a simple, modern and cost-effective way to peer with some of the largest networks in the world. The new model uses the latest technology to optimise local interconnection and a customer-based campaign strategy to ensure IXPs are built only where there is need.
"With Asteroid, we have gone back to the origins of peering," says Remco van Mook, Chief Executive Officer, Asteroid. "We feel that the IXP market has become increasingly complex and expensive. So we focus only on local interconnection. We use the latest technology, a scalable design and a campaign model to provide simple, cost-effective peering."
Asteroid’s customer-based, campaign model enables anyone in the industry to propose an IXP location. As long as there is enough support from other networks, the IXP will be built. This enables Asteroid to provide full value IXPs offering peering opportunities with some of the largest networks, carriers, and Content Delivery Networks (CDNs) in the world.
"The model is unique in the industry," says Nurani Nimpuno, Chief Commercial Officer, Asteroid. "Once a location has been proposed, customers can endorse it or commit to connecting there. As soon as the campaign has enough support, we build the IXP. And because we only build IXPs where there is customer demand, every Asteroid IXP delivers excellent value and peering opportunities from day one."
The first Asteroid IXP launched at the Nikhef Data Centre in the Science Park in Amsterdam, one of the world's most network-dense locations. By connecting here, customers can access a major low latency gateway to the continent reaching 80% of Europe within 50 milliseconds. With just one port, Asteroid customers will be able to reach an impressive amount of networks including the world's top content networks and service providers. More details about the Asteroid Amsterdam IXP are available at: Amsterdam IXP
The first IXP campaign, suggested by local players as well as internation providers, proposes an Asteroid IXP for Mombasa, Kenya. More details about this IXP campaign and other upcoming campaigns are available at:the Asteroid IXP campaign page.
Asteroid’s IXP model offers simple, effective local interconnection wherever customers need it. With some of the largest networks and CDNs on their way, Asteroid is set to be a significant player in the interconnection industry.
"Our scalable model means we move fast," says Andy Davidson, Chief Technology Officer, Asteroid. "We can set up an IXP and get our customers connected wherever there is a need. This is because each Asteroid interconnection point is a standalone solution, controlled through a single management system. This gives us the flexibility to respond quickly and deploy new IXPs as the need arises. And it means our customers can manage their global peering under one contract and one management system."
In addition, Asteroid’s IXP model enables customers to:
- add ports at the click of a button
- use Asteroid’s state-of-the-art management, peering and security features
- suggest and support new IXPs wherever they need interconnection
