Limelight further increases capacity at the Asteroid IXP in Amsterdam

Top global Content Delivery Network (CDN), Limelight Networks has upgraded their capacity to the Asteroid IXP in Amsterdam

Amsterdam, the Netherlands, 20 January, 2020 -- Top global Content Delivery Network (CDN), Limelight Networks has upgraded their capacity to the Asteroid IXP in Amsterdam. Asteroid, the global interconnection platform innovator, operates the state-of-the-art Asteroid Internet Exchange Point (IXP) in Amsterdam – one of the most efficient and modern IXPs on the market.

Limelight connected to the Asteroid IXP in early 2019, but with more content coming to the local market, and with the growing concentration of network traffic exchange at Asteroid, there was a clear need to upgrade the capacity at Asteroid, in order to meet the increased demand.

Limelight is bringing more great content to the region from Disney, Amazon, and HBO and will together with Asteroid offer the highest quality, low latency service to their customers in Europe and the Netherlands.

Whether it’s your website, mobile applications, videos, music, software, games, or APIs, your content needs to reach customers quickly, reliably, and securely. Limelight provides the capacity, coverage, and performance to cost-effectively deliver a better experience for their customers. Partnering with the right players locally is a key part of that strategy, and Asteroid’s modern, automated and efficient technical solution is a perfect match for Limelight.

"The highly efficient and automated Asteroid model makes absolute sense to a large global content provider like Limelight," said Jonny Martin, Director of Network Strategy and Interconnection at Limelight. “Asteroid's focus on local interconnection means we remain in full control of our entire traffic flows. This allows us to do what we do best; delivering that content in the most efficient way possible to the end customer.”

Limelight operates one of the world's largest networks with the capacity and reach to support the largest global events. The CDN’s global customers include the BBC, Marvel, Napster, Nintendo and NTT DOCOMO.

"We are extremely pleased to support Limelight’s increased need in local content delivery.” says Nurani Nimpuno, CCO at Asteroid. "Facilitating that content getting closer to the end user, and improving local interconnection is what Asteroid is all about.”

Limelight is upgrading its capacity at Asteroid IXP in Amsterdam in December 2019.

What is an IXP?

An Internet exchange point (IXP) is a physical location through which Internet infrastructure companies such as Internet Service Providers (ISPs) and CDNs connect with each other and exchange traffic. This allows different networks on the Internet directly to interconnect in one single hub, and shorten their path to the transit from other participating networks, thereby reducing latency, improving round-trip time, and potentially reducing costs.

What is a CDN?

A content delivery network or content distribution network (CDN) is a geographically distributed network of servers, which work together to provide fast delivery of Internet content. The goal is to provide high availability and high performance by distributing the service spatially relative to end-users. CDNs serve a large portion of the different Internet content today, including video streaming, software downloads, social media site, web and mobile content acceleration, and more.
